Sunspot AR3664

On 05/09/2024 11:00 am by Peter Greig| Hartlepool, UK

That is one absolutely colossal sunspot on the sun right now. Sunspot AR3664 has merged with another sunspot, AR3668 to form this gigantic sunspot stretching 15 times wider than Earth.
What makes this sunspot more interesting than others is its similarity to the Carrington sunspot, which caused the famous Carrington event in 1859.
The Carrington Event was the most intense geomagnetic storm in recorded history, peaking from 1 - 2 September 1859 during solar cycle 10. It created strong auroral displays that were reported globally and caused sparking and even fires in multiple telegraph stations.
