Turkey Vulture

On 05/01/2024 03:44 pm by Cecille Kennedy| Depoe Bay Harbor, Oregon

The species' common name “Turkey Vulture” comes from the similarity of its head coloring to that of turkeys. Currently it's the only species of vulture found in Oregon where they usually arrive in late February or March, leaving by mid-October. Severely backlighted rom afar I had thought he was a hawk or a juvenile eagle. As I approached the featherless red head revealed a turkey vulture.
