Due to its proximity to the Sun, Mercury is quite difficult to view, especially from far-northern locations. On 24th March, Mercury will reach maximum eastern elongation, meaning it is most suitable to see in the evening sky. Even though this photo shows the innermost planet as a mere dot of light, Mercury is about 52% illuminated by the Sun, at a distance of 47 million km (29 million mi), shining at -0.41 magnitude.
