What looks like small dark rocks in the photo are actually Sitka spruce stumps. There are about a hundred of these stumps visible at very low tide as you approach Proposal Rock. At the time I took the photo it was nearing high tide so only a few are visible. It is said that the Sitka spruce forest was buried under the sand during a massive earthquake in 1700. The locals call these tree stumps a ghost forest.
