Sometimes people ask whether the moon is in front of or behind the clouds? The answer, of course, is that the moon is behind the clouds. But why can we occasionally see the moon when there are clouds in front of it? Early this morning I took this picture of the waning crescent moon and Earthshine in a gap in the clouds, and the middle part of the Earthshine was completely invisible. It can be used to explain why the moon is covered by clouds but can still be seen? When this photo was taken, only the upper part of the dark area of the moon was above the clouds. After increasing the exposure, you can clearly see the Earthshine on the upper half of the moon, while the lower dark area is obscured by clouds. The bright area of the moon is also behind the clouds, but obviously the thickness of the clouds is not enough to block the moonlight in the bright area, so we can see the thin waning crescent moon very clearly!
