Busy traffic seen coming down Mauna Kea to the Visitor Center after their sunset viewing. The bright glow on the left is where the rangers stop vehicles to check the temperature of their brakes, forcing those with high temperatures to stop at the visitor center to cool off before proceeding. Mauna Kea sees about more than 100 vehicles each sunset. Some are tourist buses with about 15 to 20 people per van. On occasion there have been a few breakdowns on the way up to the summit; with some catching fire(!) It makes for a pretty crowded sunset viewing at the top with even more at the visitor center because many do not have a 4WD to get to the top. Have you been to the summit for its spectacular sunset?
