Great Blue Heron’s are my favorite birds, characterized by their gray / blue feathers, remarkable crowns, long twiggy legs, thick orange-yellow bills, striking yellow eyes and a very large wingspan of 6-7ft when fully grown!
Great Blue’s are tall birds native to North America and are common in wetlands and shores of open water.
They are unique in that they have specialized feathers near their breast called “powdered down” that continuously grows and frays. They comb these feathers with their claws and middle toe and it disintegrates into a powder like substance that they then cost their feathers with to protect it from fish oils.
