A yawning great blue heron standing on one leg. He was on a branch of an alder wood tree next to a few spruce trees right by the ocean. He has been preening for over half an hour when he opened his beak. I was waiting for him to do something interesting and I thought the yawn might be it. At a quick glance I would have missed him but his size gives him away. A great blue heron stands approximately four feet tall, and it is the tallest heron in North America. This one is a juvenile as evidenced by his dark upper bill, the adults have a uniform golden yellow bill.
