A pelagic cormorant, also known as a violet-green cormorant pauses briefly from preening. He is on a steep cliff by the ocean. He is in breeding plumage as shown by the two short crests (one on top of the head and one at the nape), and the vivid magenta patch of skin below the eyes which are dark when not breeding. The eyes are beautiful throughout the year, the color being described as teal, aquamarine blue, turquoise, or emerald green, depending on the light. It is said that in certain lighting the circles around their eyes look like multi-faceted gems.
