Summertime is Thundertime in Colorado: Colorado experiences on average more than 500,000 lightning strikes per year and quite often these storms are downright spectacular. Such as last night (June 21 2023), when a true monster of a storm parked itself over a huge area, reaching from the city of Pueblo across Colorado Springs all the way to Denver. The storm pounded the region with torrential rain flooding roads, in addition to baseball size hail, destroying or damaging thousands of cars and homes, and even injuring about 100 people at an open air concert in Denver. But the most obvious feature was the relentless, nonstop lightning that went on for hours.
This photo with our house in it was taken from a location about 50 miles away from the heart of the storm, and it shows the enormous storm cloud (at times reaching more than 42,000 feet high) positioned behind Colorado's Wet Mountain Range. Lightning bolts sizzling everywhere in the belly of the cloud, which was constantly changing color from purple to blue tones and even deep orange. An unbelievable show of Nature's Fury. And also of Nature's Beauty, with stars sparkling overhead the multicolored monster.
