Our home galaxy stretches in the sky, a milky white band of stars, gas and dust. The image here is only a portion of The Milky Way since the light pollution renders it into an undefined mass towards the left, still the radiant yellow green air glow there is beautiful.

According to the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), our galactic home is called the Milky Way after its milky white appearance seen across the night sky. In Greek mythology, this milky band is said to appear because the goddess Hera sprayed milk across the sky.

Around the world, the Milky Way is known by different names. For example in China it is called "Silver River" and in the Kalahari Desert in South Africa it's called the "Backbone of Night."
