This gorgeous Anhinga was posing for me at Central Park in Ormond Beach FL.

These water birds have long held the nickname “snake birds” due to their long necks that peak out of the water when they’re swimming, resembling snakes.

Despite being water birds, they don’t actually have waterproof feathers. Since their feathers aren’t water repellent and they don’t have oil glands, they have to rely on basking in the sun to dry their feathers each time they swim! This is why you can often find them perched with their wings spread out along waterways!
