The squirrel gnawed off twigs (top row of the collage), went down the trunk with the twig in its mouth, sometimes even jumping from one trunk to another (middle photo in the bottom row). Then, somewhere lower on the trunk, it sat down so that I couldn’t see it, did something with the twig, dropped it and ran up again for the new twig. This was repeated several times. She probably ate maple seeds - they are hard to see from a distance among the leaves.
