I heard their distinct trill before I saw them, the sandhill cranes feeding on the marshes at a distance. Their call is a loud, rolling, trumpet, a unique bugling sound. They grow to about 4 feet tall with a wingspan of 7 feet. They have blue gray bodies, bald red crowns, white patches on the cheeks and yellow eyes. Both male and female look alike.
A ten million year old sandhill crane fossil was found in Nebraska, and this discovery makes them the oldest known surviving bird species. (zooamerica.com)
