The Devils Punch Bowl is a large hollow naturally carved in a rock headland at the central Oregon coast which is partially open to the Pacific Ocean. The punch bowl was probably created by the collapse of the roof over two sea caves, then shaped by wave action. The bowl looks calm when I took this photo just as the sun was rising on the east. It was at low tide. During the winter storms at high tide, water from the restless ocean slams with a thundering roar into the bowl and the surf churns, foams, and swirls as it mixes a violent brew. At one time the Devils Punch Bowl was referred to as "Satan's Cauldron."
