The beautiful aurora borealis returns!

Last night, an unexpected geomagnetic storm treated us again to spectacular sky art! This time the colors were not restricted to the northern horizon, but spread in patches around the sky. Quite a bit of red in this aurora.

And did you know that the aurora borealis is caused by dragon's breath? 😉 In reality, the dragon in this photo is a glow-in-the-dark resin piece I created and have hanging above my bed. It is reflected in the bedroom window through which I shot these photos.

An even more intense geomagnetic storm viewable in my area is predicted for the night of October 1. I'll be ready!

Gotta love this more active time in the life of our sun!

I took the photo using a 12 second exposure. Later I decreased the photo's exposure and tweaked color saturation to compensate for the original's washed out effect.
