The North American Wheel Bug (Arilus cristatus) is a large species of Assassin Bug. They can reach up to 1.5 inches, and are unmistakable with the wheel shaped armor on their back.
Most of their prey are considered pests, so they are considered to be beneficial insects.
They can bite humans with a painful bite but are generally considered docile unless provoked.
I saw this individual on top of a car and there was no mistaking what it was with that almost “gear” looking “wheel.”
