The Andromeda Galaxy (Messier 31), at 2.5 million light years from Earth, is the nearest large galaxy. It has a barred spiral structure and over 20 satellite dwarf galaxies that include Messier 32 (middle left) and Messier 101 (bottom right). In 4 to 5 billion years the Andromeda Galaxy is expected to collide with our Milky Way Galaxy!
