Poolside Volcanic Sunset – 19th June 2022.
This picture of another spectacular volcanic sunset reflected in my swimming pool was taken on Sunday evening at my home in Murambi, Mutare. A now almost uniform distribution of stratospheric aerosols from the massive January 15th eruption of the Hunga-Tonga volcano is responsible for almost daily brightly coloured displays which peak in intensity between 30 and 40 minutes after sunset when normally it would be almost dark. So much material was ejected into the stratosphere and mesosphere by the Hunga-Tonga eruption (details at https://earthsky.org/earth/tonga-volcano-biggest-of-21st-century/ ) that volcanic sunrises and sunsets are likely to be experienced in the Southern Hemisphere for several more months.
