A California poppy 'Eschscholzia californica' almost in full bloom. To the right is a long spindly seed pod about to burst which when it does it makes a popping sound like popcorn. The California poppy became the state flower of California in 1903. Other than its beauty, the flowers attract bees. They don't provide nectar, just pollen, but still heavily visited by bees.
Tried several times to take a picture of California poppies that are presently blooming, but they turn way overexposed using an automatic camera, so I tried again today on a little overcast day. Felt lucky to find this specimen, since its cloudy, the rest of the fully bloomed poppies are still sleeping with petals folded.
