The Pacific Pelagic Cormorant is a graceful and prehistoric-looking seabird common along the Oregon’s rocky coast. They nest on the narrow shelves of nearly vertical cliffs facing the sea, shown on the right photo. Though they appear black, up close and seen with certain lighting, the adult plumage is iridescent teal with a tuft of spiky feathers on the forehead. They stand at about 2 feet tall, have a hooked thin bill, red facial skin and striking aquamarine or turquoise eyes. The orbital ring around the eyes give a jeweled look to their eyes, shown on the left photo.
Have a wonderful spring and summer, Earthsky Community!
