Trilliums are one of the most endearing natives of the Pacific Northwest and other places in North America. They are known as spring ephemerals, blooming in early spring. As the white flowers age they turn pink, as shown in this photo, then burgundy purple. Trillium comes from modern Latin, reportedly an alteration of the Swedish trilling, meaning “triplet,” which refers to its three leaves and three petals. The flowers have six stamens and three stigmas.
