In 1975, a violent 7.2 earthquake struck the southeast coast of Hawai'i, and creates a slump - known today as the Hilina Pali; an escarpment formed due to the slumping of the mountain. As a portion of the mountain fell into the ocean, it generates a 48-foot tsunami that took the lives of several people and injured many more. I took this photo todayl while hiking down this great escarpment of 12-miles long and 1,500 feet high. This Hilina Pali ( cliff in Hawaiian) leads down to a plateau covered in windswept grassland, and old lava flows. Occasionally, you will find a native Ohia tree or two along the way. They do provide a good shade especially when climbing back up!
