We drove up the west flank of Mauna Kea volcano via a series of hunting dirt roads. We then got off and started hiking up towards the top from the west face. We turnaround at an elevation of 12,600 feet, a couple of miles short of a prominent cinder cone named Pu'u Pohaku, just slightly west of the true summit of Maunakea. In this photo, Haleakala on Maui and Kohala Mountain can be seen.
