Again not another special bird but the Red Junglefowl (Gallus gallus), an ancestor of our domestic chicken. This is the colourful male (about 80cm) has white ear patches and a white puff at the base of his tail. They are believed to have been domesticated thousands of years ago, first domesticated for cockfighting, later for religious ceremonies and only much later as food. Some chickens were bred for their feathers, which were used in ceremonial costumes. Like other domesticated animals, there are now many different breeds of chickens for various purposes from laying eggs, providing meat or just for their beauty. Spotted one fowl during my morning walk and best known of all bird calls. They make territorial call, crowing from an elevated roost before dawn. The call is also made during the day as the bird patrols its territorial boundaries. Or just before mating… or to show dominance over the others in the flock
