The north facing Kohala coast consists of jaw-dropping 'pali' or cliffs punctuated with many waterfalls. This pali was created from a massive slide that took place about 780,000 years ago. The Kohala Mountain is the oldest volcano on the Big Island, which meant it had many years exposed to water and wind erosion. This part of the pali is the section just before Waimanu valley. There is a lone villager who still lives and farm in a small outcropping below the pali called Laupahoehoe Nui ( nui means big in Hawaiian).
