A complex combination of thin ice, wind-blown snow, and a combination of warmer and cooler water temperatures can form beautiful patterns on lake surfaces. In the center of each circle is a "lake star" where heavier snow weights down the ice into warmer water, resulting in a small hole. Snow pulls the warmer water up and stellar arms are created, hence the name "lake stars". You'll need to zoom in closer to see the stars, it was snowing at the time of the shot, reducing their visibility.
