The California Nebula (NGC 1499) is an emission nebula located in the constellation Perseus. It is approximately 1,000 light years from Earth and 100 light years in length. The reddish glow results from hydrogen atoms recombining with electrons that were ionized and stripped away by energetic starlight, most likely from the hot, bright star Xi Persei above the nebula in this image.
