Rising 500 feet above the Pacific Ocean, Cape Foulweather is “where Oregon began.” It’s the first Oregon land formation that Captain Cook spied in March, 1778. Cook coined the name for the fierce weather and rough ocean conditions that he and his crew encountered. But not on the night this photo was taken. One couldn’t have asked for a nicer night. The moon is setting on the western horizon lighting up the sea and making the stars look faint although Antares (the brightest star in the constellation Scorpio) sparkles bright. Jupiter and Saturn also shine brightly. Then a meteor streaks through as if signaling the end of the Milky Way season.
The lights on the left come from Otter Rock houses, condominiums (Otter Rock, population 225) , farther south are lights from the city of Newport (population 11,199) and also from small picturesque coastal cities (Agate Beach, South Beach. Seen on the horizon are crabbing and fishing boat lights.
