This is a common Desert Stink Beetle found in the Southwest USA. As the left image shows, they are harmless and remained calm in my hand for the picture. But when there is a perceived threat, they will flee or stand their ground...usually nearly vertical and squirt an unpleasant, malodorous, biochemical spray. The right image shows the beetle ready to spray.
