On a partly clear night, I watched and waited for the clouds to pass by to have a view of both the Big and Little Dipper, to take this photo.
Part of the constellation Ursa Major or the Great Bear is the Big Dipper which was used as a navigational tool by ancient sailors and travellers to locate North. The two stars that form the side of the Big Dipper opposite the handle point to the bright North Star or Polaris. If you imagine a line between these two stars and extend it, this line points almost exactly to Polaris which is ALWAYS located to the North. Polaris marks the tip, its the first star of the handle of the Little Dipper. Trivia: Alaska's state flag features The Big Dipper and Polaris the North Star; the flag design was created by Benny Benson, a 13-year-old 7th grader from an orphanage in Seward, Alaska.
