A bright nova discovered by Robert H. McNaught of Coonabarabran, NSW, Australia, with a Canon 6D camera and an 8-mm-f.l. f/2.8 lens is gracing the southern skies in Reticulum. The star — at my maximum magnitude estimate (4.8) on July 16th — nearly rivalled nearby Gamma Doradus; the star had dimmed to magnitude 5.3 on the morning of July 17th, but was still an easy naked-eye object, when this image was taken.
