Having survived its close encounter with the Sun, here we see Comet NEOWISE (Near Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer) suspended above the mountains of North Vancouver. This photo taken from Vanier Park in Vancouver, B.C. at about 11 PM PDT on July 14, 2020. One of the brightest naked-eye comets in the Northern Hemisphere since Hale-Bopp in 1997, NEOWISE won't make another appearance until about 7800 AD. It will make its closest approach to earth on July 22, 2020, when it will be visible below the "ladle" of the Big Dipper. Many of us have been cooped up for months. This once-in-a-generation spectacle is a great reason to get out and take in the night sky.
