While having a short stroll when I took a walk to buy lunch, I passed by this flowering plant, the Caesalpinia pulcherrima. It is from the pea family, Fabaceae, native to the tropics and subtropics of the Americas. Common names for this species include poinciana, peacock flower, red bird of paradise, Mexican bird of paradise, dwarf poinciana, pride of Barbados, flos pavonis, and flamboyant-de-jardin.

Interestingly it is the national flower of the Caribbean island of Barbados, and is depicted on the upper left and right corners of the Queen Elizabeth II's personal Barbadian flag. The genus name of this plant is in honour of the Italian physician, philosopher and botanist, Andrea Caesalpino. His most important publication, De plantis libri XVI (1583) is considered the first textbook of botany.
