The photo shows Mercury returning to evening twilight. The planet reached superior conjunction on May 4 and is now ascending in the dusk sky. It is very hard to grasp with unaided vision from Rio as it is still very low in the western sky. The shot was taken when it was 14.8 degrees from the Sun and only 3.9 degrees above the horizon.
