Canis Major (the "Great Dog") follows Orion the hunter across the sky each night. Likewise, my faithful canine companion Takoda joined me on the hunt for shooting stars during this week's Lyrid meteor shower, as we went star-gazing from home. I wasn't born with the mind of an astrophysicist, so gazing into the heart of our home galaxy always feels somewhat magical and mysterious to me. (And I'm pretty sure that Takoda agrees.) One way to share that feeling is to create a time-bending image that is both beautiful and perplexing at the same time. There are more than a dozen meteors among the star trails, and Venus' arc to the horizon (center) somehow creates a triangular reflection on the lake. Among the reflections you can also discover Orion's belt stars and his red shoulder, Betelgeuse. So much to ponder at night, even for an old dog.
