Late Rainy Season Lightning in Mutare on 15th April
Zimbabwe rainy seasons are notorious for lightning strikes which result in the country having one of the world’s highest per capita lightning fatality rate https://www.zimlive.com/2019/11/20/lightning-turns-rainy-season-into-time-of-woe-in-zimbabwe/ The most dangerous storms usually occur in early to mid-season which lasts from November to April. This year there have been an unusual number of late rainy season storms with spectacular lightning as the accompanying set of pictures taken on 15th April shows. This storm originated from the southeast and headed northwest (from top left to bottom right in the mosaic) which is the opposite direction to that normally experienced when the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) is still south of the equator. This storm produced very energetic lightning with two multiple strikes being captured on video which can be viewed at https://youtu.be/sAkGajsLxHw The first struck 7 times and the second 10 times at the same points on the ground.
