The 4 brightest objects in the night sky framed by the Winter MilkyWay and my neighbors' annoying landscape lighting.
Sirius is twice as bright as Canopus.
Venus is 16x brighter than Sirius
The Crescent Moon is 100x brighter than Venus
That would make the Moon 3,176 times brighter than Canopus.
At first approximation, the brightness magnifier is 2.5 raised to the X power, where X is the difference in visual magnitude between two objects (a star that is mag -1 is 2.5x brighter than a 0.0 mag star). In case you wish to do these calculations yourself. 😊
Magnitude is exponential. If the Moon happens to be 30% brighter (0.3x), that would be very difficult to detect!
