If you ask most people what the largest crater on the Moon is they will most likely say Copernicus.
Bailly is the largest impact crater on the near side of the Moon. But residing very near the South limb, it's not the easiest to spot. Tonight the Moon is at -6° libration in latitude (it's tilted up). You can see the entire crater. It looks oblong because of the Moon's curvature.
When the Moon is at +6° libration in latitude (tilted down), Bailly all but disappears!
I gaze at this image and imagine the incredible impact that created Tycho. It gives me the willies! 😱 Do people still say that?
