Lepus is indeed an unremarkable constellation. Even in a dark, transparent sky it's difficult to make out. But it does contain one of my favorite double stars: gamma Leporis. You can split this double with binoculars and the color contrast is very nice.
Viewing Lepus (the rabbit) does bind my thoughts to ancient stargazers. It makes me want to have what they were drinking!
