The Sun had set about 35 minutes before when I first noticed Mercury (at m=-0.6), low in the western horizon, seen just above a cactus plant. Some 25 times brighter and higher than Mercury, there was Venus (m=-4.1), an easy target even only 10 minutes after sunset.
