Detail of Spectacular After-Sunset Twilight Display
A combination of thin dispersing high cloud and stratospheric aerosols produced a spectacular after-sunset display between half past six and a quarter past seven on Thursday evening. Five minutes after the Sun had disappeared behind Hospital Hill, the south-western sky brightened as reflected setting sunlight produced a broad yellow and then orange halo in thin high cloud above the sunset point. This was followed by the development of a magnificent cone of magneta sunlight flanked by cloud shadows on both sides which receded towards the horizon and faded until just a pale opalescent twilight arch remained.
