The beautiful Lambda Centauri nebula lies 5° West of Acrux, the bottom star of the Southern Cross. In the same binocular field of view is the Pearl Cluster (C97) just to the North.
The nebula looks best thru binoculars or a low power eyepiece. Switch to a high power eyepiece and you can see double star lambda Centauri's tiny companion. C97 is gorgeous at high power. Even in this low power image you can see two of it's red giant members. C97 is also called the "Rich Man's Jewel Box", in reference to the less ornate Jewel box Cluster on the East side of the Southern Cross.
The Pearl Cluster lies directly on the Galactic Equator.
