The Riphaeus Mts (my Lunar "M") form the Western boundry of Mare Cognitum, which was named in 1964 to commemorate the landing (crash) site of Ranger 7, the first lunar probe to capture and transmit high resolution images of the Moon. It was a kamikaze mission. A very expensive kamikaze mission! And I get upset if I drop my camera!
Of course Mare Crisium is Latin for "The Sea that has become known".
