EarthSky recently posted an article about why evergreen trees retain their foliage year-round. The author mentioned an exception, white pines, which only keep needles through one winter. I went out walking last weekend and discovered that the wind and rain over the previous few days had brought down a carpet of needles around all of the white pine trees in the woods.
