This is what you can expect to see if you aim your binoculars at the Beehive Cluster in Cancer. The brightest members of the cluster are magnitude +6 to +7. Thru a larger scope, hundreds more stars appear.
The ancient Greeks and Romans saw this cluster as a manger (praesepe in Latin) with two donkeys (asellus in Latin) feeding from it:
Gamma Cnc (Asellus Borealis) and Delta Cnc (Asellus Australis). In Greek mythology, these donkeys were instrumental in the Olympians' defeat of the Trojans.
So everytime I gaze at this cluster, I ponder what those wacky ancient Greeks were smoking.
