A male black horse fly. Horse flies are notorious for inflicting painful, bloody bites, but only the female can inflict such wounds. She needs protein contained in blood to produce eggs. Horse flies are the bane of humans and livestock alike. You can tell the sex of horse flies by looking at their eyes – male eyes are close together and appear to touch. Females have separated eyes.
