Rather than go to Stone Henge and face the crowds, I went to Kokino, Macedonia. It's an archaeological site located in an area called "Taticev Kamen" (www.kokino.org.mk) or just Google it.
It's in Northeastern Macedonia not far from the Serbian border. The site is an early Bronze age settlement around the 20th-17th B.C. This is a Megalith Observatory ranked 4th by NASA (2005 list) out of 15 ancient observatories in the world. From the viewing platform "C", you can observe the Solstices, equinoxes of the Sun and the positions of the rising Moon as well. Pic is the sun rising though the marker.
