Canopus Only 7.7 Degrees High Over a North Florida Southern Horizon. Though taken in 2018, photo is timely. Canopus peaks through trees at bottom where tree line dips. From Gainesville, Florida, where photo taken, Canopus is never higher than 7.8 degrees but can be glimpsed near upper transit if horizon is clear. High above are numerous winter stars including those of Orion (upper right), Canis Major with Sirius (just above center), and Canis Minor with Procyon (upper left). Though photo taken only 8 miles southwest of the University of Florida campus, camera detected stars down to about magnitude +9.
